If you’re looking for an exhilarating read in the Tanzanian capital Dar Es Salaam, check out the restaurant reviews in the Sunday Citizen newspaper. Here’s a taster of these lively descriptions of culinary experiences:
Dar Alive/Cine Club reviewed by Sophia Said
“… I had to ask for the menu but, Oh my God! It was the same set up as at Samaki Samaki where I went last week. It was choosing your meal from a list on a blackboard, written with chalk! Instead of laughing, I told myself that may be it was a new style and I was the one who was “old fashioned!” I read the menu very carefully and finally fell for to Tandoor Chicken, which costs Sh9,000. Hee, hee it was mouth-wetting chicken, very delicious and tasty too.”
The Silver Spoon reviewed by Elizabeth Tungaraza
“… After ten minutes, our food was on the table with its mouth-watering aroma. In flight parlance, the flight was excellent but the landing terrible. I don’t know why most chefs think they know best what customers want to eat. The prawns were so chilli such that the meal was to some extent, a punishment. But giving it a second thought, it was all the fought of the rude waitress. If she knew her job, she should have cautioned us that anything masala is usually served hot and whether that is what we wanted. The rice was quite good and sprinkled with fried onions, carrots and green pepper. While eating, the manager came again asking if we needed anything. At least he showed some concern but only God knows how devilish workers could be.”
Chef’s Pride, anonymously reviewed:
“The decor, though not too exotic, does the trick and makes one feel cozy and comfortable, in a lively sort of way. It is not the type of coziness that makes you want to cuddle up for a romantic escapade, but rather it’s a lively cozy feeling that comes when one rest for a good two hours at the end of a busy midweek day. In the Chef’s Pride, I believe, this kind of feeling comes from the mixture of what looks like mahogany furnishing, blended with orange wall paint and yellow lights, as well as a few but effective trees thrown in for the natural look. Taking a glass of cold refreshing pineapple juice before taking my meaty cocktail helped cement this mood in me. … All in all, my dining experience at Chef’s Pride was pleasant with good service and an interestingly mixed racial crowd.”
